For more than one hundred and thirty years, Rennes-le-Château, a village perched on a hill about ten post leagues south of Carcassonne, Bérenger Saunière, parish priest at the end of the 19th century, spent a fortune to decorate the church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine.  [He] built a vast estate and lead a sumptuous lifestyle.

In the village, it was rumoured that the Abbe had found a treasure. This rumour, probably too rural to the taste of some, has been swept away since the late 1960s by countless bookish hypotheses, as reckless as they are unfounded: Abbé Saunière discovered not a treasure, but an unspeakable dynastic secret, [protected] and covered by a mysterious secret organisation. And it was the Church that paid for a cover up.

This scholarly book proves the opposite.

Berenger Saunière did get his hands on a material treasure.

And it's in the history of the place for more than one thousand five hundred years that the author found the evidence of this.........
