And here is a curious book to say the least! Because of its title, Le Veau à Cinq Pattes (France Secret, September 2008), but also because its signatory is none other than the excellent Marquis Philippe de Chérisey. And if all this were not enough, let's add to salivate again that the subtitle is: Notes on the work of Abbé H. Boudet, on his sources, his temperament, his ideal and his life. The book is prefaced by a certain Remy Hanquet, who presents himself as someone who has worked alongside the author, in the company of Lionel Vroman and another companion whose name is not mentioned. The manuscript would have been entrusted to the preface by Philippe de Chérisey, and following the pressures of André Douzet, was the subject of this publication. The book seems big, but it is only an illusion since it includes the facsimile of the original document and a transcription to facilitate reading.
Let's say that if the book of the Balnorenn pastor remained an unfathomable mystery to me, the work of our Marquis hardly brought me elements that could facilitate its understanding. He indeed engages in a multitude of digressions, starting from the characters or places mentioned by the abbot, with a stunning erudition and a stripping humor. A special mention for his analyses of Saint Vincent de Paul and Notre-Dame de Marceille, as well as how he dismantles one of the sources of inspiration for La Vraie Langue Celtique, namely the magazine Le Magasin Pittoresque. We should also point out a good bibliographic study, starting from the original edition and its variants, as well as on the first reissues.
A real curiosity.
